QDot™ SharpGreen Perovskite Quantum Dots Film for LCD displays

Displays have long become an integral part of our daily life. We are spending over 8 hours behind the monitor watching videos and TVs, playing games, or working. Thus, demand on better quality colour representation in screens is getting essential for many of us.

An introduction of quantum dots technology became a big leap in improving a colour delivery  in displays. While an average screen could reproduce only up to 70-75% of Rec2020 colour standard, the first generation, CdSe and InP, quantum dots, integrated into an LCD had allowed to increase its colour gamut up  to 80%.

Another quantum dots technology, Perovskite QDs, allows to achieve even a wider colour gamut. Green emissive Perovskite Quantum Dots embedded inside of a polymer film can deliver over 90% of Rec2020.  Quantum Solutions’ QDot™ LCD SharpGreen Perovskite QDs film has green emission at 525 nm with high quantum yield over 90% and extremely narrow FWHM < 20 nm. Due to it,  QDot™ film is able to  provide purer green colour as compared to standard LCD display or CdSe and InP quantum dot technology, therefore, upgrading the colour range in displays to a higher level

To demonstrate the film performance, Quantum Solutions has fabricated 7’’ LCD display prototype where the backlighting system consisted of blue and red LEDs with QDot™.

Figure 1. LCD display prototype configuration and light spectrum

The display demonstrated promising results in terms of  high colour gamut ratio, which was:

  • Rec2020 > 85%,
  • DCI-P3 > 110%, and
  • Adobe RGB > 110%.

And the colour gamut coverage:

  • Rec2020 > 80%,
  • DCI-P3 > 90%, and
  • Adobe RGB > 95%

White point coordinate was close to D65: 0.3025; 0.3270.

Although it is just the first prototype, the results were quite fascinating. The display with the QDot™ Perovskite film can deliver more vivid colours comparable with old LCD technology. Further realization of > 85-90 % Rec. 2020 standard coverage is on the way that is possible by optimizing the backlight sources and colour filters.

QDot™ SharpGreen Perovskite QDs Films for LCD are available for prototyping purposes. QDot™ Films demonstrated its stability in harsh accelerated test condition of high temperature, humidity and light conditions proving its reliability for 30,000 hours.
